Overview

Melancholy is a very unusual series. It is not shown in chronological order - and it's not shown in backward chronological order. If you don't know this going in (I sure didn't!), the first few episodes can be very confusing! (Hey, last time she had to wear a scarf, and now it's the beach episode?!) It keeps you on your toes, but rewards you if you are observant and remember what the characters say. Usually there is a connection between the two episodes.

Storyline

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Picture 1 The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is a strange anime. The main character, Suzumiya Haruhi, enters high school still holding onto some "childish" motives - when introducing herself to the class, she says that she welcomes the company of or information about time travelers, aliens and espers (psychics)! Her class is quickly weirded out, and most of them just ignore her and her vivid imagination.
The boy sitting in front of Haruhi, however, has little choice. At first, Kyon (who narrates much of the series) seems as confused by Haruhi as the rest of her classmates, but he slowly warms up to her and her stories. Kyon also has a very hard time telling anyone 'no' - and Haruhi has a hard time taking 'no' for an answer! He is quickly roped in to join the club Haruhi creates.
The SOS Brigade is formed because Haruhi is not happy with the clubs currently available at her high school. She wants to find espers, she wants to talk with aliens, she wants to know how time travelers get to her time! There isn't a club that caters to Haruhi's interests, so she creates her own. After not hearing the answer of the sole member of the Reading Club, Haruhi happily accepts her donation of the Reading Club's former club room and the SOS Brigade finds a home.

Characters

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Picture 2 Haruhi Suzumiya: Main Character of the series. She is filled with hope that this world will be more interesting than it appears on the surface. She desperately hopes to see the secrets this world has to offer, so she starts the SOS Brigade to uncover them!

Kyon: Narrator of the series. Sits in front of Haruhi during class, and is unwittingly recruited into the SOS Brigade, then continues on with the club partially out of fear of what will happen if Haruhi gets angry with him!

Nagato Yuki: Sole member of the Literary Club. She donates the Literary Club's room to the SOS Brigade on the condition that she will be allowed to continue reading her books in the clubroom.

Asahina Mikuru: An unlucky upperclassman that Haruhi finds wandering in the hallways and kidnaps to the SOS BRigade's clubroom, she is nominated to be the club's mascot because of her large breasts.

Istuki Koizumi: The other male character, Itsuki quietly encourages Haruhi to pursue her aliens, time travellers and espers. Much to Kyon's chagrin.

Animation

The animation of this series is above average. It's no masterpiece, but it's pleasant to watch and the character designs ar every nicely done.

Voice Acting

The voice acting for this series is high quality - all of the voices match the character designs very well. My favourite voice would have to be Kyon's. He narrates much of the series, his voice fits his character to a T and it is very pleasant to listen to.
The only voice that got annoying was Mikuru's. I feel it was too breathy and squeaky in an effort to be cute.

Likes

The best part of this series is its plot. It's a tight plot, it's very well done, and it will (hopefully) make you wish the series were just a little longer. Personally, I hope they leave the series just as it is, because I fear that any addition will add unfinished edges to a very well done plot, and just water down the quality of this first series.

Dislike

Every once in awhile you wish Kyon just wasn't so dense about things!
