A deeply involved technological story taking place in the here and now.
There are two worlds. The physical world in which we all live, and the world of the wired (the internet). A thirteen year old girl named Lain receives an email from a classmate who commited suicide, and it seems that the real world and the wired have started to merge.
Lain - The main character of the story. She starts out not having a clue about computers, and as the episodes progress, learns more and more. By the 4th of 5th episode, her computer simply makes me jealous.
Arisu - Lain's best friend.
Lain's Mom - She's a very detached, quiet woman. She hardly says anything through the series.
Lain's Dad - A computer user who shows Lain how to use her computer, while warning her about the dangers of the wired.
Lain's Sister - Older than Lain, she seems full of mistrust and dislike for her younger sister.
Wow. The art on the DVD cases alone sold me on the 12 episode series, and I picked up the first disc without having a clue what it was about. The animation is spectacular. It's a great example of what's possible in today's animation.
The voice acting was great. Unlike alot of anime that I've seen, nobody sticks out in my head as being real annoying. I've watched a couple episodes dubbed out of curiosity, and while the original Japanese dialog is incredibly better, the dubbing isn't that bad.
The storyline is really involved and full of twists. Everytime I thought I knew what was going on, something would happen that confused me all over again.
The storyline is a double-edged sword. While it's what I liked the most about the anime, it was a bit TOO confusing. I watched it and understood Akira by default.
